Back to Bath

Pulteney Bridge, Bath
June 2007

My iTunes: These Are The Days by 10,000 Maniacs

The day before yesterday I gave you a glimpse into our whirlwind trip to Bath. It is just an amazing city. I am eager to go back and spend a lot more time there soon. Bob-Kat, here you go! The above image is of the Pulteney Bridge that crosses the River Avon. It was designed by Robert Adam and was completed in 1773. The original purpose of this bridge was to connect historic Bath with the suburbs that were beginning to form in that day. The Pulteney Bridge is only one of four bridges that has shops running the length of the bridge on both sides. And while there has been many restorations, it is one of the best known sites in this city.

It was quite breathtaking as we came upon this bridge in the early evening. The skies were beautiful and the water running beneath provided a very serene and relaxing sound. I snapped this to remember a bit of that moment. The image below is of one of the guides in the city to help you find the various sites. I have always liked these beause I like the fact they go in all different directions. I decided to snap this one. Here in London, you can have 10 or 12 sites on it, pointing every which way. I will be sure to snap one of those as well so you can see...

So much for my Wordless Wednesdays...

Which way again?

It's funny to remember that I used to think of Avon as strictly a cosmetics company.

They make rivers, too!

Great photo and history on the bridge. One of the things that amazes me about Europe is the sheer longevity of many of the structures. Over here on the other side of the pond, we think a building's old if it was built 150 years ago.

Ha.

Beautiful. Everything looks old and regal. Thanks for sharing.

What a fabulous signpost. You captured the angle and the directions flawlessly (is that how its spelled?)

That's a unique stepped area beneath the bridge. There's something about the sound of moving water that is very relaxing.

Those building flanked bridges facinate me. I saw a show on Edinburgh the other day and they have bridges like that all over the city. You can't even tell you're on a bridge. We got nothing like that here.

The angles of the bottom picture have me wondering what the streets looked like. How can those angles be accurate? Streets obviously not built for high-speed motor traffic.

Great 10k Maniacs tune. I think you let the chorus get the best of you, though. The title is "These are Days."

Just sayin' is all.

Great song, though. I love some 10K maniacs.

Amazing. The bridge and surrounding area is gorgeous.

I love both of the photographs, but that bridge really catches my imagination. Think of all the folks who've crossed it in all that time and their lives...
