Big Skies and Big Rocks

Stonehenge
June 2007

My iTunes: Stolen by Dashboard Confessional

When our family was visiting here last weekend from the States, we woke up and decided to go on a spontaneous road trip....to Stonehenge. Pretty cool. From our front door, it is 90 miles. We packed up seven people and set off in the car. I have to say that we have been lots of places since we have arrived in the UK and lets face it....I could spend two years exploring just the city of London itself. We are were all pretty excited about this because none of us had been before.

Warning...here comes a another history lesson....

Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Archeologists believe that the standing stones were erected about 3200 BC. Scientists have come up with many reasons from astronomy to human sacrifice as to why Stonehenge was built with over thirty million man hours. The big mystery that we may never understand is exactly how these stones were brought here and stood upright.

I had a great time photographing these rocks. It is pretty amazing when you consider how long they have stood here. I prefered taking these shots like the first and second images because the sky was spectacular the day we were there. The last image was my husband being funny so I couldn't resist posting it.

Have a great week everyone!

So cool that you featured Stonehenge. I just read about a guy out in the US West (New Mexico?) who built a site called Stonefridge (a.k.a. "Fridgehenge") made of more than 100 old refrigerators. City made him take it down.

I like yours better.

That is hilarious Mark....and thanks!

love the last one.

I remembered you mentioning Stonehenge was smaller than you thought, but I had no idea!

Anna,
That's awesome that you got to photograph such an historic site! Wow! I would have loved to have been there as well!

I like how you emphasized the sky and clouds in relation to the site. It's as if they're reaching to the heavens.

Even the funny pic with your husband's hand and arm can be interpreted in an artistic, meaniful way. I noticed the tatoo of Christ on his arm. It's as if Christ is represented achknowledging the site in some way. As if to say, "Yeah, I see your quest to find me, here I am, I'm who your looking for."

I would definitely be framing that first one and putting it on my wall if I were you! Not everyone gets to photograph something like this!

"Lucky!" ;)

You are so right Chad...

and I will be framing the top shot.

What a gorgeous day for a road trip!

So, do you think if you backed your car into them, they would topple like dominoes?

It would be really cool to see it in person.

Blessings!

I like the top one best. This is another subject that has been photographed so much that it's tough to get something unique. Sometimes you just settle for a good photo. The top one is that to me.

See what I mean? So much in common. It's scary. Music, movies, and now:

Our kids are mk's, too. :)

John....you are so right...it is hard to photograph something like this. I am glad that you liked the top one.

I like the top one the best, also.
It has a great sky to it, & the tones of the b&W are perfect.

When you do frame that first one, don't forget to photoshop out that little "historic marker" near the bottom right corner with the stamp tool or something ;)

I'm SO glad you went there! I hope to see that before I die.

That shot plays much better in black and white. It gives it an ancient feel. Beautiful shots - adding it to the list of places to visit before I die.

Hi Anna! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Your pictures are awesome! I've been looking them over and I like them all. I'll have to come back and see more of your corner of the world!

Wow, how neat to be able to take your own pictures of Stonehenge. I really like the top one in black and white but I do like the way you composed your color shot also. It is not the typical way I see shots of the site.

Glad you got to go and as always it is good to see the camera along. Any pictures of seven of you cramed in that car?

Actually Mike, no, I didnt get that shot...aminly becasue without me....it just would be six! :)

Stonehenge is on my list of places that I need to travel too before I die, there seems to be this mysterious detatchment from standard society harnessed in the stones.

I watrched a whole special about how maybe they were built by or set up to communicate with aliens. Haha, i dunno if I believe that, but it was still interesting.

One day I will travel to the UK, and hopefully we can meet face to face and possibly have a camera war!

P.S. Thank you for all of your compliments and support, I appreciate it so much!

Stonehenge is one of those "before I die..." places for me.

I love what you did with the uppermost photo; lots of drama there.

Wow, your husband is a big, strong guy!

That first image is so powerful, Anna. Really amazing. And to get Stonehedge without any other people in view is really fantastic, Anna.
