London Bridge Is Falling Down?

London Bridge
June 2007

My iTunes: Take My Life by Third Day

Nope...it seems to be just fine.

I am not sure if you all were under the same impression as me but I ALWAYS thought the London Bridge was the Tower Bridge....but it isn't. The image above is the London Bridge. I thought I would take a moment to share some more history and clear this up for everyone....

A bridge has existed here in this spot over the River Thames (pronounced temz) for nearly 2000 years. Hard to believe. The first bridge was built by the Romans in 60 AD. Through the years, bridges have been built and deteriorated here. In 1831, yet another bridge was constructed. Many years later in 1968, the bridge was bought by an American entreprenuer for 2.5 million dollars. The story goes that he thought he was buying the Tower Bridge. It was disassembled and numbered to be put back together in Lake Havasu City, Arizona and is still standing there today.

Pretty cool, huh?

The modern day bridge was built in 1972 and today cars and pedestrians go across daily to get from one side of the Thames to the other.

Hope you enjoyed another short lesson.

That song by Third Day is great. Is it the live version? It's a particular favorite because of where we first heard it.

I always thought London Bridge was the other bridge as well. Thanks for the photo.

I missed your BD post? Was your BD June 3rd? If so, that is my husband's BD, too!!
Happy belated 29th!! (tee hee)

I knew which bridge was which, but I thought London Bridge was in Arizona. I didn't know it had been replaced with a new London Bridge in London. This is confusing. For $2.5 million he should have gotten exclusive rights to the name too! Thanks for the "abridged" history lesson!

Thanks for clearing up the London Bridge confusion.
Its always fascinating coming to your blog.

Yes, growing up I always thought London Bridge was the Tower Bridge. It wasn't until I visited London in 1996 that I discovered the truth! The Tower Bridge is by far a most lovely, amazing bridge but your shot of the London Bridge makes it look lovely too.

It never dawned on me that the bridge was rebuilt after the other one was moved to AZ. Good lesson, teacher!

A real "London Bridge"!

I just heard one from 3rd Day today...about there being a "light at the end of the tunnel". I like that.

Yep, in my mind I guess I was picturing the Tower Bridge all these years.

Nice shots. You planning to sell any of your city shots to the London Tourism Bureau (or whatever it's called over there?)

How do you get to hear your music? Is there a secret?

That's a very stable looking bridge, Anna. I wonder why all the worries about it falling down. ;-)

I've been told before which bridge was which...and then I promptly forget and return to picturing the Tower Bridge...as I'm sure I will agains soon. But thanks for trying to enlighten me ;)

The picture is facinating. The shadows really add complexity to what would otherwise be a fairly standard looking bridge
