Sounds of India

Playing the Tablas
May 2007

My iTunes: Praise You With the Dance by Casting Crowns

It has been a wonderful weekend. Nice....and sunny. Last night, went to a Garba. It is an evening of traditional Indian celebrating that includes dancing and music. I can't begin to tell you of all the sights and sounds. The decorations of flowers, vibrant fabrics and candles really set the mood of the evening. The women were all dressed in their finest sarees and Punjabi suits in brillant colors that spanned the rainbow.

The above image is of one of the musicians playing his tablas. They had such a wonderful sound as we did dandia and garba dancing. I even managed to put my camera down for a few minutes to get out on the dancefloor myself. I know, you probably don't believe me but it's true. :) I will share some more photos in the next few days.

Have a good week everyone and thanks for all your thoughtful comments...

Would you believe that I really like listening to drums, and I even have several tapes devoted to drums and percussion alone? I'd love to hear what their music sounds like.

Your choice of toning works great with this photo!

So cool that you featured this pic right while I'm watching "Touching the Sound," a wonderful documentary. I say "while I'm watching" because I have to watch things in chunks. So far, the primary subject of the film has set up her snare drum in a busy train station and started playing. Gradually more and more people turned to listen, but it's remarkable the number of folks who completely ignored her. Many applauded when she finished. Now she and another percussionist (they "play" on all kinds of surfaces) are setting up a studio in an old warehouse.

Of course, had I been in India listening to the tablas, I would have totally geeked out and recorded some of the sound with my binaural mics attached to my glasses. Then you would have had a funny picture to include here!

Wow Anna I cant believe that I have missed so many of your posts!!

The cakes baked by Sadie and the one by your/her? cousin are also wonderful. What a nice gesture from her, I wish I had that kind of relationship with my daughter.

I have shot a Muslim wedding and the colors are fabulous, I agree, makes for lovely photos. The children are also gorgeous with those beautiful big brown eyes. It looks like you had fun.

Thank you also for your visits to my blog and words of encouragement.

(((Hugs)))
