Experimenting with Sam

Sam
March 2007

FINALLY! Sorry about the wait. I had to post through Foxfire to get the files to upload. Thanks for all the advice you all left for me. I am still not sure what that is all about. It may have been an APPLE issue. My daughter is having the same trouble from her computer. OK...boring. Let's move on...

Here is my image for yesterday. This is Sam. And these are the first pictures taken with my new NIKON SB600 speedlight. I am learning about it still but I can tell I am going to love it. You can tell I was eager to shoot with it...can you see the faint remnants of his kool-aid mustache in the top image? Ahhhh...childhood. Also I snappped the one below as I was experimenting. For those of you who use one of these...feel free to comment with any tips that might be helpful for learning.

Thanks for checking back.

More great portraits! Will you share what you're doing to soften the focus?

You must be using a Nikon camera, what kind of flash is this... I know you gave the number, but is is an off camera one? I know on my regular 35 mm I had a flash with a movable flash head and it was very nice.

Welcome back...I know you weren't willingly gone!

These are great shots. I like the way you got the soft light with the flash. I have always had difficulty with flash as being too harsh. So you have already achieved something that I have not been able to do.

Perhaps I will have to try one of the "real" Nikon flashes. I have been using a Promaster.

Hope your uploading issues get resolved, good to see your pictures.

B&W portraits are so compelling!

The soft focus just makes these images. The face of a child just begs for captures like these.

Nicely done. I'm so glad I brought my SB-600 home as well. It's yet another wonderful photographic tool. Clearly in your case, it's in very good hands.

Hi Anna,

Sorry I haven't been around, I'm really busy at work and have been travelling a lot - in fact I'm away from home for two days now.

I enjoyed catching up on your pictures and I'll try to keep up to date!

These are wonderful potraits.

I love it when someone thinks they can look at a photo and tell what brand camera it came from.

After all this time of looking but never commenting, what could motivate me to leave a comment? It's almost 11 PM here, and after 13 hours of criscrossing Delhi, what a joy it is to get back to where I am staying, get on the internet, and be able to see my son Samuel's sweet face looking back at me. I just spent the last 30 minutes revisiting previous posts so I can look at the kids and how wonderfully you have captured them. Thanks honey. I love you.

We have two more days in Delhi before we head off into the countryside, where I'm guessing the internet will be hard to come by.

Give the kids lots of hugs for me.

I need to buy a good flash. The way the light works on Sam's skin is great, Anna. It's very hard to compensate for having inadequate equipment--I'd never be able to get portraits that good with my camera/flash.
